Shutdown Leads to Community Organizing On Steroids

While our president still enjoys his essential employees and locations: the White House chefs, Camp David, and a military golf course, there doesn't seem to be any question that in mercenary pursuit of a political win, this White House is determined to unreasonably punish as many everyday people as possible. And this includes children sick with cancer. That might sound like hyperbole, but it is not.

Although Barack Obama's chefs have been deemed "essential," employees at the National Institutes of Health who offer last-chance experimental cancer treatments for children suffering from cancer have not. Worse still, House Republicans have offered to compromise with the president and single the NIH out for funding. The White House has threatened a veto.

Using children sick with cancer as pawns is community organizing on steroids. And the media are covering for him. When the media thought they could emotionally blackmail the GOP with these sick children, telling their story was all the rage. Now that it is Obama and Senate Democrats wrist-flicking refusing treatment for these children, suddenly the media aren't too interested in telling their story.

There are many other examples of this president's cold-hearted fanaticism and willingness to punish people for reasons that seem to have much more to with spite than what is and is not "essential." In fact, there are a number of examples where Obama seems to be spending more money and using more resources to close and block and inconvenience than to just leave it alone.

The media may or may not report on these individual occurrences, but what they will never do is provide the American people with the full context and scope of Obama's shrill pettiness.

Below is a list of illogical, unnecessary, and shockingly spiteful moves our government is making in the name of essential and non-essential.

1. Treatments for Children Suffering From Cancer - The GOP have agreed to a compromise by funding part of the government, including the National Institutes of Health, which offers children with cancer last-chance experimental treatment. Obama has threatened to veto this funding.

2. The World War II Memorial - The WWII memorial on the DC Mall is a 24/7 open-air memorial that is not regularly staffed. Although the White House must have known that WWII veterans in their eighties and nineties had already booked flights to visit this memorial, the White House still found the resources to spitefully barricade the attraction.

The Republican National Committee has offered to cover any costs required to keep the memorial open. The White House refused. Moreover, like the NIH, the GOP will pass a compromise bill that would fund America's national parks. Obama has threatened to veto that bill.

3. Furloughed Military Chaplains Not Allowed to Work for Free - Furloughed military chaplains willing to celebrate Mass and baptisms for free have been told they will be punished for doing so.

4. Business Stops In Florida Keys - Although the GOP have agreed to compromise in the ongoing budget stalemate and fund the parks, Obama has threatened to veto that funding. As a result, small businesses, hunters, and commercial fisherman can't practice their trade. While the feds have deemed the personnel necessary to keep this area open "non-essential," the "enforcement officers" to ensure no business is done are "essential."

5. Obama Blacks Out Sports, Entertainment Programming to Overseas Troops - The American Forces Network (AFN) that provides American sports and entertainment programming to our troops stationed abroad, has been shut down. For some reason, though, AFN News will still broadcast news, just not any of the popular and fun stuff.

Camp David is essential, but popular programming for heroes overseas is non-essential.

6. Obama Closes D-Day Memorial - The GOP have offered to compromise and fund the National Parks. Obama has said he will veto this compromise legislation. As a result, along with 24 other military cemeteries, the D-Day memorial in Normandy has been barricaded.

7. Obama Tries to Close Privately-Funded Mt. Vernon - Although George Washington's Mt. Vernon estate is privately funded, the feds blocked visitors from entering the parking area because the Park Service maintains the lot. Apparently, the New Media publicity resulted in the feds backing down.

8. Obama Closes Over 100 Privately-Managed Parks That Cost No Money to Run - The U.S. Treasury actually makes money from the rent paid by a private company that "employs about 400-500 camp workers and managers across about a dozen states." No federal money is used to operate these parks. No federal employees are used to staff these parks. Taxpayers make a profit from these parks. Still, Obama had them closed and as a result 400-500 employees and a private business are taking it in the neck.

9. Obama Closes Self-Sustaining Colonial Farm It Hasn’t Supported Since 1980 - "For the first time in 40 years, the National Park Service (NPS) has finally succeeded in closing the Farm down to the public. In previous budget dramas, the Farm has always been exempted since the NPS provides no staff or resources to operate the Farm.”

10. Obama Tries to Close State-Run Parks in Wisconsin - "The park service ordered state officials to close the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine, Devil's Lake, and Interstate state parks and the state-owned portion of the Horicon Marsh, but state authorities rebuffed the request because the lion's share of the funding came from state, not federal coffers."

11. Obama Closes Vietnam Memorial - The GOP have passed compromise legislation that would fund national memorials and parks, and open them to the public. Obama threatened a veto. Apparently, the "essential" government employees are those erecting barricades, not those who could keep the memorial open.

12. Obama Closes Privately-Owned Hotel, Police Block Parking Lot - "The operator of a 51-room inn located on U.S. government-owned land in North Carolina abandoned his defiant stance on Thursday to keep the property open despite being ordered to close as part of the federal government shutdown."

October is this inn's prime season. The GOP have offered compromise funding opening the parks. Obama said he will veto that compromise.

13. Park Service Ranger: 'We've Been Told to Make Life As Difficult For People As We Can' - “It’s a cheap way to deal with the situation,” an angry Park Service ranger in Washington says of the harassment. “We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”

14. Obama Forces Residents Out of Private Homes - "The government shutdown is being felt close to home for some locals. They say they're being forced out of private homes on Lake Mead because they sit on federal land."

The GOP have agreed to fund the parks. Obama has threatened a veto.

15. Acadia Park In Maine Shut Down - '"We’ve been training for two years at CrossFit for this hike — no kidding,” Hart said. She added that the shutdown should be as inconvenient for the Washington politicians who caused it as it is for average citizens.'

The GOP have agreed to fund the parks. Obama said he will veto.

16. Historic Restaurant Open During Last Shutdown Forced to Close - "An iconic Philadelphia restaurant has been forced to close its doors and turn away booked parties because of the government shutdown. …

"Restaurant public relations director Molly Yun said they were notified there was a possibility a closure might happen, but they were allowed to remain open during the last government shutdown 17 years ago."

The restaurant is part of the federal park system, which the GOP have agreed to fund. Obama said he will veto the funding.

17. Obama Shuts Down a Road That Goes Through CO Park: "The Forest Service announcement, in turn, led the Pitkin County commissioners to order that Maroon Creek Road be shut down at the height of the colorful leaf-changing season. Ahead of what is to be one of the busiest weekends of the fall, the road is to be closed to vehicles at T-Lazy-7 Ranch, pending a resolution to the government shutdown."

The GOP have agreed to fund the parks. Obama said he will veto that compromise funding.

18. Residents Plan Protest of Cape Hatteras Closing - "Businesses and residents on the Outer Banks have planned a peaceful protest of the closure of Hatteras Island's beaches due to the government shut down.

"The U.S. House Wednesday passed a measure to reopen national parks and monuments. It will now go to the U.S. Senate."

In the unlikely event the Democrat Senate passes the bill, Obama has threatened a veto of any compromise legislation opening the parks.

19. Obama Blocks People From LOOKING at Mt. Rushmore - "Blocking access to trails and programs at South Dakota’s most popular attraction was one thing, but state officials didn’t expect Congress’ budget stalemate to shut down a view of Mount Rushmore.

"The National Park Service placed cones along highway viewing areas outside Mount Rushmore this week, barring visitors from pulling over and taking pictures of the famed monument.

The cones first went up Oct. 1, said Dusty Johnson, Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s chief of staff. The state asked that they be taken down, and federal officials did so with some of them. The state was told the cones were a safety precaution to help channel cars into viewing areas rather than to bar their entrance."

20. Crucial USDA Websites Taken Down - "The U.S. Department of Agriculture has turned off its entire website in response to the government shutdown, leaving farmers, reporters and others with no way to access any of the agency's information online. …

"USDA's total website shutdown goes far beyond the response of other federal agencies, and seems to be part of an effort to make people feel the effects of the shutdown. Thursday morning calls to USDA's press office seeking an explanation were not answered."

This website is down and yet the ObamaCare and White House websites are up.

21. St. Louis Gateway Arch Closed - The GOP have agreed to compromise legislation funding the parks. Obama has threatened a veto.

22. Park Shutdown Bounces Rowers from Potomac - "The ripple effect of a government shutdown has pushed rowers from the Potomac River.

"Multiple high schools rent space at the Thompson Boat Center in Georgetown. But like other places controlled by the National Park Service, it closed Tuesday morning."

The GOP have agreed to compromise funding opening the parks. Obama has threatened a veto.

23. Thompson Boat Center Closed In DC - The GOP have agreed to fund the parks. Obama said he will veto.

24. Obama Closes Military Commissary - "Military members, veterans and families who shop at local tax-free store are shocked to discover the store's doors locked; no progress to end stalemate in Washington."

While the government has deemed the White House chefs "essential," working class military personnel have lost their tax-free store privileges.

Military personnel and their families tell me that they have never lost these privileges in previous shutdowns.

25. Arizona Offers to Fund Grand Canyon, Obama Says 'Drop Dead' - "Obama has ordered the Grand Canyon to stay closed, even after the state of Arizona and local businesses have offered to cover the costs necessary to keep it open. In other words, the shutdown isn’t about the money — it’s about hurting the American people just because he can."

26. Amber Alert Website Taken Offline - CNN reported that bad press was a factor in the site going back up.

Why would White House chefs and Obama's golf course be categorized as "essential," while the government classified as "non-essential" the Amber Alert website?

Of course, this is the same Obama threatening to veto cancer treatments for children.

27. Miramar Air Show Canceled With One-Day Notice -“The emotional and economic impacts of losing this year’s event are great, and I’m extremely disappointed in the political dysfunction that brought us to this point,” Gloria said.

"Proceeds from the event go to programs that support families of military personnel, he said."

28. At Start of Peak Season, Shutdown Closes Peaks of Otter Lodge - "Although the Blue Ridge Parkway remains open to travelers, the Peaks of Otter Lodge cannot stay open while the National Park Service is not operating during to the government shutdown. With no Congressional compromise reached by the end of the day Monday, the lodge’s restaurant shut down and guests were given 48 hours to find somewhere else to stay."

The GOP have agreed to compromise and fund the parks. Obama has threatened a veto.

29. Federal Prison Guards Not Getting Paid, Inmates Are - "Most of the employees at the federal prison in Forrest City are working without knowing when they will get a paycheck because of the government shutdown, but some of the inmates who get paid for the work they do inside will have no problem collecting their money."

30. Family that Paid $2,000 for Permit Not Allowed to Raft - "Sorry for the inconvenience," it read.

That's when rangers told them they wouldn't be able to put in on the river the next day, despite having paid $2,000 for a permit to do so.

The news was shattering, Scott Lee said.

The GOP have agreed to fund the parks. Obama has threatened a veto.

31. Although Privately Funded, Historic Ford's Theater Closed - "Ford's Theatre, which is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, does not use any federal funding or federal employees for its performances. During previous government shutdowns, the theatre has continued performances."

32. King Crab Season Threatened by Government Shutdown - "The Alaska king crab season is set to start soon, but all the fishing boats will have to stay docked because the government must sign off on permits and quotas.

"Fisherman stand to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars unless lawmakers make a compromise."

Obama's golf course is open. So is the website for Michelle Obama's "Let's Move."

33. Children Might Lose School Lunches - "Minnesotans are adjusting to the partial government shutdown, but if it lingers too long, there is a chance the 300,000 kids who rely on free or reduced lunches at school could go hungry."

The White House chefs have not been furloughed.

34. Feds Shut Down Major Roadway, Puts Children's Lives at Risk - "Nearly a third of Blount County is inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. So when the federal government shut down the park, it also shut down one of the area’s chief sources of revenue.

"The children live in the eastern Tennessee community of Top of the World – serviced by School Bus 49. Normally, the bus travels along the Foothills Parkway. Other roads leading to the isolated mountain community are impassible by bus.

"“It’s dangerous,” said Nancy Kemp, the spokesperson for Blount County Schools.”It’s very curvy and straight up the mountain. It’s just not a safe route.”"

The GOP have offered compromise legislation funding the parks. Obama has threatened a veto.

35. Road to Brasstown Bald Closed During Peak Season - "It's not unusual for the road to the top of Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia, to be closed in the winter months but in early October, with "leaf-looking" season just around the corner?

"The Georgia Department of Transporation (GDOT) announced Monday, though, that it is, in fact, closed. Why? At the request of the U.S. Forest Service and because of the government shutdown. The forest service operates the facilities on top of the mountain as well as the visitors center at its base."

The GOP have offered compromise legislation to open the parks. Obama has threatened a veto.

Obamacare Exemptions

I keep hearing the main stream media types telling me how great the Affordable Care Act is going to be for me.  If it is good for me, I am sure I will be good for everyone else too, right?

If that is the case, how can anyone explain the partial list below of groups that have been exempted from this wonderful law?

Keep in mind this is not by any means a comprehensive list of the exemptions.  I am sure there are many more that I have missed:

Is the Shutdown Really the Republicans Fault?

Is the shutdown really the Republicans fault?
Of course, all the news outlets are saying it’s the Republican’s fault. And all the Democrat talking heads are saying it’s the Republican’s fault. But is it really ALL their fault?
The concept of a two-party system is that differences are negotiated to compromised solutions. But the Democrats refused to compromise. And even worse – they are all claiming it is the Republicans that refused to compromise.
The Republicans started this fiasco by insisting that Obamacare be completely defunded. Of course that was a no-go for the Dems.
So by the time it came down to the eleventh hour showdown, the Republicans had offered multiple scale-back compromises, until their final offer only had two points of contention with Obamacare.

1) They wanted the individual mandate to be delayed for a year – just like Pres. Obama had already done for the small businesses mandate.

2) They wanted Congress and its staff to have to participate in Obamacare – just like the rest of the country.
From complete defunding to asking that the Democrats get in the same boat as the citizens certainly sounds like compromise to me.
But what did the Democrats say? From their repeated on-camera news appearances throughout the day and evening, from the president down to the lowliest member – it was…
We will not compromise on Obamacare!
So is it really ALL the Republican’s fault?
Say what you want about partisan bickering in the United States Congress and the government shutdown, the facts are simple.
The Republicans in the House of Representatives repeatedly compromised, moving increasingly closer to the position of the leftists. Democrats in the Senate and President Obama refused to budge an inch. You cannot blame Republicans for this shutdown. The only blame that can be placed in this mess is on Barack Obama and Harry Reid for absolutely refusing to compromise with the House of Representatives.
Look, Republicans control the House of Representatives. Democrats control the Senate and the White House. For some reason, Democrats believe the House of Representatives should just be a rubber stamp for their aggressive, irresponsible, and unpopular progressive agenda, especially when it comes to Obamacare. Despite repeated attempts and pleas by House Republicans to reach a compromise budget with Democrats in the US Senate and Barack Obama, the Democrats flat out refused to even discuss possible compromises with the Republicans.
From the sick, twisted minds of Democrat strategists and leaderships, this is nothing more than a calculated political maneuver. They know that 2014 is shaping up to be an insanely Republican year. They know they’re likely to lose the Senate. After all, more Americans are identifying themselves as “conservative” than at anytime since 1952. That’s due in no small part to the people learning more and more about what Obamacare actually does and how they can expect to be screwed over by it.
However, by using the poor and the elderly as pawns in their manipulative political positioning, Democrats hope to make Republicans the bad guys who shut down the government. This is nothing more than a game to Democrats.
Barack Obama and his Democrat cronies can negotiate with Vladimir Putin, but not Republicans.
These socialist can negotiate with Iran and Syria, but not Republicans.
This administration has no problems regularly working with China; which murders thousands of innocent men, women and children; pollute the water and air more than any country in the world; steal protected material; steal our national secrets; threaten our greatest allies in Asia and the Pacific; and promote communist insurgencies in Latin America… yet when House Republicans want to protect the people from a bad law that is going to hurt millions of Americans and cause the price of health insurance to skyrocket more than it already has, Barack Obama won’t budge.

Call your Congressmen, write your town newspapers, and do everything you can to make sure the country and the world knows that this government shutdown is merely a political ploy of Barack Obama and Senate Democrats.

Is Washington Listening to You?

Increasingly, voters feel the people who represent them in Washington are ignoring what truly motivates and frustrates them.  When Washington talks about the economy and jobs – the top concerns to voters for five years now – they talk about “job creators” and the unemployed.  But the vast majority of American households are headed by jobholders.
Working Americans worry about inflation more than immigration.  They are focused more on food and fuel costs than on fiscal cliffs.  They worry more about retiring in good shape, than about regulating guns.  You would not know that, however, in the parallel universe that is Washington.
One reason for the disconnect:  Politicians use polls and focus groups to help then win elections, but not to govern.  They listen most when they need votes; that is, roughly every two to four years.
The same week the president, in his State of the Union address, asked Congress to spend billions on climate change, transportation, the minimum wage, and more, a Fox News poll showed that 73 percent of Americans believe less government spending will help the economy grow.  Only 15 percent thought more government spending is the answer.
Congress meanwhile, drones on about drones.  It continuously issues continuing resolutions.  And the GOP absorbs all of the baggage of being viewed as the party of morality and values.  Yet a February 7-10 Gallup poll found that ethical and religious decline ranked higher as a top concern than many issues the Beltway favors, such as immigration, national security, Social Security, poverty, gay rights, and terrorism.
Education is another issue that seems conspicuous by its absence.  Some 53 percent of Americans told Gallup last year that they are dissatisfied with the quality of K-12 education.  According to the Board Education Foundation, 75 percent of students are not proficient in civics, 3 out of 4 eighth graders cannot write proficiently, and the dropout rate for African-America and Hispanic students is 40 percent.
That data point should raise the eyebrows of a Republican Party struggling to connect with minorities.  Not all the nation’s problems are economic.  What ails Americans cannot fit neatly into a sound bite or an executive order.

Congress has a 14 percent approval rating.  Some 62 million voters cast ballots against Obama last year.  These numbers are not just indictments of job performance.  They are an indication that ordinary folks are worried that no one is really listening to them anymore.

A Very Divisive President

Until the end of last week, things had clearly been going President Obama’s way – he had been winning the political fight since being re-elected.  But is he brining us together as a nation?
His inaugural address was an elegant, eloquent, and compelling speech.  It invoked the key message of equality – for women, minorities, the disabled, and gays.  He put himself in the same category as Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Abraham Lincoln.
He argued that we are a nation that defends our people and our values at home and abroad.  That we will tackle climate change and see government reforms.
That said, while the tone was uplifting, the rhetoric was ideologically driven and potentially quite polarizing.
Before the inaugural address, the president had two big fiscal cliff wins.  He won the fight over taxes in the fiscal cliff negotiations, managing to get a deal that was totally imbalanced in the Democrats’ favor and offered only $1 in spending cuts for every $44 in tax increases.  And with the decision to do a three-month extension on the debt ceiling, Republicans are on the defensive.  But in these victories the president set himself up for a great fall even beyond this past week’s latest fiscal cliff “crisis.”
It is becoming increasingly clear that the Republicans have no strategy on the debt, deficit, taxes or entitlement reform.  They need an inclusive, pro-growth agenda and until they get one, the Democrats will continue to dominate negotiations.
But President Obama is losing the long-term battle that will be played out over the next four years, potentially hurting himself, the Democrats and the country by continuing to employ the divisive approach he used throughout campaign season and the first few months of his second term.  Why do I say this?  First, he is hurting himself because his legacy is based on inclusiveness, being a different kind of president and doing politics a different sort of way.  His partisan approach since the election is antithetical to why he was elected in the first place.
In his inaugural address, he made the argument in favor of his progressive, collectivist approach to government.
This raises serious doubts in the longer term for the ability of the Democratic Party and the president to forge the kind of consensus America needs to move forward.  We need compromise, and from this speech, it is far from clear that the president and his party are capable, or interested, in doing this.
Second, he is hurting the Democrats because they have to move to the center and take on spending and entitlements, neither of which he has encouraged.  We saw how important this shift is in 2010, an off-year election, when that electorate was much more sensitive to spending and tax issues than the previous presidential election.
In turn, the president must be solicitous of real world concerns to reform the debt, deficits and entitlements and show he can be socially progressive and fiscally conservative as Bill Clinton was in negotiations in 1995 and 1996 with Newt Gingrich.
Finally, the president is hurting the country because he has failed to recognize that we are a nation at risk.  As former Bill Clinton Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles and Sen. Alan Simpson have argued, we are facing unsustainable fiscal challenges.  Our debt has recently reached over 100 percent of GDP.  We have to rein in spending and need a balanced plan that also includes increased tax hikes.
Despite setting up the Bowles-Simpson commission, the president rejected the plan and, further, has not yet said what he plans to do to address the fiscal challenges.
As a number of people have said, and I agree, our national security is inexorably linked to our fiscal health.
Unless we are able to pull together as a nation with common purpose and a clear sense of fiscal discipline, ultimately the American people will lose.
This will be Obama’s greatest failing, and although he is racking up a few short –term wins, he seriously runs the risk of steering us into one of the most serious crises in American history if he doesn’t adjust his approach.

Obama: Debt Problem? What Debt Problem?

Now that President Obama has clarified his intention to kick the U.S. entitlement crisis down the road to a future administration, economists are assessing just what that will mean for America’s future.
In June 2010, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, called the national debt “our biggest national security threat.”  The President’s own Simpson-Bowles deficit commission warned, “America cannot be great if we go broke.”
That provoked Associated Press reporter Ben Feller to ask the president in February 2011, “Where is your leadership on that issue?”  But the budget he proposed to the Senate that year was rejected unanimously:  97-0.
Many observers naturally assumed Obama would address entitlements after winning re-election.  But instead, he told the nation the Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security “do not sap our initiative, they strengthen us.”
By most estimates the national debt, if left unattended, will be about 20 percent greater the day Obama leaves Washington than it is today.  Already it is a staggering $16.4 trillion. And because hordes of baby boomers get closer to retirement age with each passing day, the fiscal chasm continues to grow exponentially.
The Congressional Budget Office currently estimates that the national debt will reach 90 percent of the GDP about four years after the president leaves office.  Some predict that will happen much sooner, given the added entitlement spending in Obamacare.
By 2025, according to the president’s own debt commission, total government revenue will only be sufficient to pay for four items:  Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and interest on the national debt.  Every other federal activity – block grants, transportation spending, the military, homeland security, you name it – will have to be financed with borrowed money.  Higher interest rates will reduce productivity by an estimated 15 percent.
Debt at this high a level has deeply problematic implications for the economy and families.  It means much slower growth, higher interest rates, and higher inflation.
By 2028, just paying the interest on U.S. debt will cost over $1 trillion per year.  That year, by the way, just happens to be the year the president will turn 67 – currently the official retirement age. By then, the national debt won’t be Barack Obama’s problem.  He’ll be retired.

Govorning By Crisis

American voters may or may not like the particular fiscal cliff deal reached Tuesday night - and probably most do, given that many economists thought another recession could be triggered if we went over the cliff.

But one thing apparent to all voters was the depths of dysfunction to which their representatives in Washington, D.C., have sunk.

It's reached the point where Congress governs almost exclusively by crisis. Negotiations can't get anywhere until dire consequences are hanging right over their heads, with scissors poised to cut the line and let the consequences fall.

A deal to avoid the cliff was reached, but only after the House and Speaker John Boehner threw up their hands, and the White House and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had to save the day.

The stock market is rallying and the economy is out of immediate danger. But the deal - a small one that's nothing like the grand bargain President Obama and Boehner have flirted with a couple of times - sows the seeds of the next congressional crisis, which will arrive around the end of February.

The fiscal cliff deal put off the deadline for deciding what spending to cut by two months, and that's about the same time U.S. government borrowing will hit its debt ceiling again. There will be a huge battle over raising the ceiling, combined with one on trimming the deficit.

And it was the last battle over the debt ceiling that was settled by putting the fiscal cliff in place - essentially, Congress holding itself hostage to make sure some future deal would be made. Now the deal is in place, but it sets up another debt ceiling battle.

Congress and the White House have come full circle. Or, more accurately, they have run around in circles and find themselves right back where they were.

So, get ready for the next fiscal cliff, er, debt ceiling fight. By now we know better than to get worked up about it until the deadline arrives; Congress certainly won't.
